| Location Braeside is situated in the town of Katanning, in the central great southern region of WA. With a population of approximately 4 500, Katanning is the centre of a successful grain and sheep farming area. Braeside was officially opened in 1980 by Hon. R. C. Old, MLA, Minister for Agriculture and the foundation principal was Mr Peter Appleton. Demographics Currently there are 220 students enrolled from P -7and the school population is comprised of a unique blend of cultures including Noongar, Malay, African and English backgrounds. The school includes 9 classes from pre primary to year 7. School Resources Students enjoy a safe and secure learning environment and extensive play areas with new playground equipment currently being installed with soft fall landing. A new library, dedicated Art and Music rooms, networked computers in each classroom and a fully mobile laptop unit for class use complete a well resourced school. Braeside Primary School offers a balanced curriculum with an outcomes approach providing breadth and depth to learning experiences. Provision of a comprehensive SAER program and a Learning Support Coordinator ensures that Individual Education Programs are an integral part of learning programs across the school. Special features Braeside is a 'Crunch and Sip School', 'Asthma Friendly', 'Sun Smart' and 'Peanut Free'. It caters for all students with provision of a variety of programs including Choir, TAGS, Clubs, participation in inter school spelling and maths competitions and swimming, cross country, winter carnival events and athletics. The Health/Phys Ed. Program is further enriched with a Whole School Daily Fitness Program. The school also runs an Aboriginal LOTE Cultural Awareness Program, a collaborative effort between the LOTE teacher and AIEO. Noongar Homework classes and an ITAS program is further enhanced by individual education plans for all who participate in these programs. The Pre primary and Year 1 classes have re-established best practice in early intervention strategies by including ADOLF oral language screening and learning program and strategies for the early childhood years. This is also implemented and supported by the off site community kindergarten that is a feeder into the Braeside Pre Primary. Braeside PS staff includes an AIEO, Education Assistants of whom 5 are directly employed to meet the special needs of individual students, 13 teaching staff including Health/ Physical Education and Art Specialist teachers, registrar and part time office/library staff. Community The school community is engaged and proactive. The School Council meets at least once a term and plays a pivotal role in the development of the school plan, policy formation and school accountability. The P and C meets monthly, supports the school with a variety of fund raising exercises throughout the year and focuses on improving school facilities. Parent help is promoted and encouraged at sporting events, busy bees and within the classroom through an organised timetable of volunteers. In 2007 the school will pursue and introduce the School Volunteer Program to encourage support from the wider community as well. | ||||
