| Bluff Point Primary School was established in 1913, on the site subsequently converted to the Geraldton Camp School. The school was moved some 300 metres north along Chapman Road to its present location in 1965. There are currently 500 students enrolled in Kindergarten - year 7. The student population is diverse with 30a0Aboriginal and about 5a0Malay. The school is well resourced from a wide variety of additional programs. Due to the hard work of the P&C and planning of the school executive team the grounds and buildings are constantly being improved and enhanced. The stunning ocean views make this a pleasant learning environment. Our vision of Bluff Point Primary school is that individual student needs are met through teaching and learning programs that reflect current 'best practice'. The school motto of Strive for the Highest is at the forefront of all programs. School values reflect STRIVE - Self discipline, Teamwork, Respect, Integrity, Vigour and Empathy. The school seeks to provide an educational program that caters for a broad spectrum of abilities, needs and interests of students and to have strong links with parents and the local community. The inclusive nature of the plans and programs is a distinctive feature of the school. Students attending the school are, characteristically, from the suburbs of Bluff Point, Spalding, Sunset Beach and the coastal corridor above Drummond Cove. CURRICULUM: KINDERGARTEN 3 groups of 20 students are catered for in two purpose built ECE transportable buildings. PRE PRIMARY A Full time five-year-old (Pre Primary) program is available on-site. The two Primary centres are expansive in size and feature up-to-date resources and programs, carefully selected to maximise learning opportunities. 'Interest Centres' are allocated generous space to encourage interaction between the children. The focus of these interest centres changes frequently in response to the developmental learning program provided by qualified Early Childhood teachers, Teacher Assistants and Aboriginal Islander Education Officers. PRIMARY Students study the full range of subjects appropriate to their ability level. There is a strong focus on Literacy and Numeracy at the centre of all learning programs. Programs, delivered by highly qualified and experienced specialist teachers, are provided in Information Technology (Library), Technology and Enterprise, LOTE and Physical Education. Students spend some time each week receiving these programs and enjoy use of the most up-to-date equipment and teaching/learning practices in these areas. LOTE in Indonesian was offered to Years 3-7 for the first time in 2000. In 2003 Wajarri Aboriginal language was provided for year 1 and 2 students and in 2004 and ongoing has been offered to year 3-7 students, depending on the availability of Wajarri speakers.RESOURCES: The school boasts a well equipped computing facilities in all classrooms. The use of technology to support the curriculum is strongly advocated by the school. Students are strongly skilled in a wide variety of IT functions and programs to support their learning. The internet and intranet are fully established and used well by all staff. A substantial Covered Assembly area provides a meeting venue for school assemblies and the conduct of a range of extra curricula activities including visiting performers and exhibitions. This facility also ensures that the school's highly regarded Physical Education program is able to function year round, irrespective of climatic conditions. A modern, well-resourced and automated Library is a focal point of the school. Specialist instruction in the use of the facilities provide students with experience in using computer equipment, (scanners, digital cameras, interactive whiteboards, digital projectors etc.) which they will continue to interact with during their secondary, tertiary and employment years. Students requiring access to an Education Support program are also well catered for at Bluff Point Primary. All Education Support students are fully integrated into their classrooms with a qualified ESU teacher providing individually tailored programs to be undertaken in their classroom. A number of students with disabilities are fully integrated into the school supported by an inclusive learning environment fostering tolerance and understanding and assisted by Education Assistants to support their learning program. PARENTS: At Bluff Point Primary School parents and caregivers are recognised as important contributors to their child's social, physical, cultural, moral and intellectual development. We perceive our relationship with parents and caregivers as being part of a team endeavouring to achieve common goals. Parents play an important part in the life of the school: * helping with the implementation of a range of in-class programs * assisting with extra curricula activities * participating in the decision making process via an active P&C and School Council * supporting the ongoing development of the school resources and facilities via the P&C * attending parent information sessions and meetings.ENROLMENT POLICY: In keeping with DET policy, the School's Enrolment policy is non-discriminatory and without consideration of religious denomination, race or academic achievement. Admission is subject to approval by the Principal. Within the staff there are a several of 'job share' teaching arrangements and many part time appointments, raising the number of teachers working on the BPPS site to 39 FTE. The school has a range of experience levels amongst the teaching staff from recent graduates to many years of experience. Currently there are a number of teachers appointed to the school in a temporary capacity to fill vacancies for permanent staff on leave. In 2004 the school had two District winners of the Premier's Teacher of the Year awards, Mrs Lyn Tapper and Mr Brett Normington. In 2005 four teachers have been nominated by the community for the National Excellence In Education Awards receiving certificates of nomination. PROMOTIONAL & LEADERSHIP POSITIONS The school has a non-teaching Principal (Level 5) and two Deputy Principal positions (level 3). The Curriculum DP leads the CIP implementation and the SAER DP leads the programs to support student at educational risk. All Priority and Learning area plans are led by teachers and many leadership opportunities arise throughout the year. NON-TEACHING STAFF The non-teaching staff play an important role in the implementation of a many initiatives. The school places significant emphasis on pastoral care, and it is in this area that many of our non-teaching staff has an important role. TIMETABLING: The school implements collaborative planning on a weekly basis with teachers of similar year levels planning together with the curriculum Deputy Principal and the Getting it Right Numeracy specialist on alternative weeks. These planning sessions are in addition to normal DOTT allocations. SPECIAL FEATURES: In addition to being located on prime real estate with commanding ocean views, the school is one of the 100 Schools Technology schools. Additional resources are provided to the school for teachers to use information technology across the curriculum. A comprehensive professional development program has been in place since 1997 to provide teachers with the expertise in using state-of-the-art multi-media computer technology as an integral part of the teaching and learning program. Bluff Point PS staff, students and parent community support the values of the school to 'Strive For the Highest' in all dimension of student learning programs.
