| Blackmore Primary School is situated in Girrawheen in the Swan Education District. The School caters for approximately 230 students from K-7. Included on the site are two Education Support Units (Senior and Junior) that cater for students in Years 1-7 who have learning disabilities. Approximately one third of our students were born outside of Australia and come from non-English speaking backgrounds. The School?s Purpose Statement The School's purpose is to provide an education which will develop knowledge, skills and understandings that will enhance the children's self worth and their appreciation of the environment in which they live so that they participate as informed, responsible members of society. Staff Profile Blackmore Primary School has an experienced, collaborative and supportive staff. The school also has a Getting It Right Specialist (GiR), English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher and a Vietnamese translator/education assistant, numerous volunteers from Volunteers WA, who work in most classes, as well as an Aboriginal Islander Education Officer (AIEO). The Role of Teachers Three teaching and learning education blocks were developed for 2006. The staff are responsible for the educational planning and tracking of their students in the their blocks. The major emphasis is to give students the skills, concepts and tools needed for successful learning. The focus is on developmental education and high quality teaching and learning practices across the blocks. All teaching and non teaching staff work in a flexible, collaborative and supportive manner to enhance the social, emotional and academic outcomes of all children. The Features of the Learning Program A number of new initiatives have been undertaken in the learning program giving Blackmore Primary School new directions in student learning and assessment. Pastoral Care at the school is an important consideration and a major focus. The aim is to ensure the best opportunities for student learning. Students and staff have access to student services such as school nurse, the ESL team, school psychologist, GiR Specialist, AIEO and outside agencies. The main focus of the Student Services team and the staff is to incorporate strong partnerships with the families of students involved, including home visits, case conferences and mentoring of students. Improving student learning through ICT is another major focus of the school. The school has received a grant of $150 000 for the implementation of ICT infrastructure, leading to a major integration of ICT and quality teaching and learning. Strategies are in place to use technology as a 'tool' for learning. The LOTE program at the school focuses on Spanish and is currently available to Years 2-7. Parent Participation Parents have the opportunity to participate in the school in both a formal and informal way. A committed group of parents regularly attends the Parents and Citizens? Association meetings and assist the school through fund-raising and other initiatives. A large number of parents also assist in the junior classes, in the school library and on excursions. | ||||
