| Binnu Primary School is situated approximately 85km north of Geraldton on the North West Coastal Hwy. The town site consists of the school, one GEHA house, a community hall, four tennis courts and entertaining area, two private residences, BP shop, garage and house and a series of large grain silos. The local 9 hole golf course is nearby. The children are predominantly from farming backgrounds. Grain and sheep farming are the main industries in the area. Most of the children are brought to school from the surrounding farms by bus. Children from the Barrel Well Aboriginal Community attend the school. The community is supportive of the school and the education of their children. The school currently attracts three full time teachers and one Principal. It has a part time registrar, teacher's aide, librarian, cleaner and a gardener. These employees all live locally and have been employed by the school for varying lengths of time. Binnu PS has three classes, K- 1, 2 - 4 and 5 - 7. Indonesian and Music are offered one day per week taught by specialist teachers. The school has a purpose built technology shed which is regularly used for 'Technology and Enterprise', Art and Music sessions. A Pre Primary upgrade caters for the Kindergarten and Pre Primary programme. Computers are located in each classroom. They are connected to the Internet, via a network, in order to integrate technology into the classroom. The school has also structured its support time in order to assist the students at educational risk. The school decision making processes are largely carried out in a consultative process incorporating the School Council, Principal, staff and P&C. The P& C is very supportive. The students also elect a student representative to attend P&C meetings to express their views. One of the major difficulties experienced by the school is its remoteness from a large centre. Travelling to Geraldton (85km) for swimming lessons or learning activities is a whole day proposition. However; Binnu's remoteness is also a positive in that it promotes a stronger community and as such the school enjoys a high level of parent support. | ||||
