| Bassendean Primary School first opened as West Guildford Primary School in October, 1906. As the area developed the Guildford name was reserved for land east of the Swan River. In 1922 the West Guildford area was renamed Bassendean as was the school. Additions to the school were made in 1912 (classrooms), 1915 (pavilion classrooms) 1945 (classrooms & corridor) 1975 (Classrooms and resource centre) 1993 (covered assembly area including canteen and storage for PE, cleaners and gardener, purpose build Pre-primary classroom) 1995 the addition of a transportable Pre-primary classroom, 1998 another transportable for Kindergarten and Kadee Aboriginal Kindergarten (closing in 2006). The school celebrated its centenary in October 2006. A major centenary project involving students, parents, staff and the Swan River Catchment Group was the transformation of the front garden. 'Waterwise' plants have been used along with a low water use irrigation system funded by an Australian Government community water grant. In 2007 a computer laboratory was constructed with funds gained from the Australian Government's 'Investing in our Schools' program. A joint submission put forward by the school and the P & C for a grant of $150 000 was accepted. The school used $40 000 of its own funds to complete all aspects of the project. In 2004 the school community articulated its vision and values as a means of demonstrating what we stand for. The following statements resulted. OUR VISION Bassendean Primary School aims to provide a positive and safe environment that enriches each individual child's desire to learn, encouraging them to become happy, responsible, confident members of our community. OUR VALUES People who learn, work and interact with Bassendean Primary School share an educational environment founded on these key values: * Showing RESPECT for ourselves, each other and our environment. * ACHIEVING our individual potential through the PURSUIT OF KNOWLEDGE and a COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE. * Acting with HONESTY AND INTEGRITY in all we do. * Taking RESPONSIBILITY for our actions. * VALUING DIVERSITY as demonstrated by the EMPATHY we have for others. * Showing PRIDE in our school and community. * APPRECIATING our Australian heritage. * Displaying CITIZENSHIP as a valued member of the community. As we enact these values in our daily lives we strive to achieve the following goals. STAFF AIM TO: * be responsive and approachable; * recognise and care for the individual needs of all students; and * create an enthusiastic and positive learning environment PARENTS, CARE GIVERS AND FAMILY MEMBERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO: * participate actively and constructively in their child's education; * show respect and support for the endeavours of staff in recognition of their position as dedicated professional role models; and * cooperate with the school in meeting the challenges and opportunities of educating our children. The local community has a strong link with the Arts with several families involved in the Arts as a hobby or means of employment. In 2007 a part time Arts teacher was employed. Student learning is supplemented by participating in Arts events sponsored by the Town of Bassendean and other local organisations. Our school also participates in Wakakirri (story dance), with students mostly from Year 4 to 7 given the opportunity to be involved. We have made the state finals from 2002 through to 2006. Other additional programs we have had at the school in recent years include: 'Edu-Dance' - a contemporary dance style choreographed to music and performed at the end of year concert. We run the Department of Sport and Recreation's 'Active After School Program' two afternoons per week. In recent years many of our Year 7 'leavers' have been accepted into special programs in secondary schools. In 2004 and 2007 two year 7's were accepted into John Curtin College of the Arts; several students are a part of the Hampton SHS leadership program with others being accepted into the dance program. Several students have been selected for the football program and academic extension programs at Governor Stirling SHS. Our head girl (2005) won a scholarship to Perth College. | ||||
