Pilliga Public School is a small isolated school situated 60 kilometres west of Wee Waa and 100 kilometres east of Walgett in the heart of Kamilaroi country. The village of Pilliga does not have sealed road access and wet weather impacts dramatically on the community. Remoteness, community tension and socio-economic disadvantage have all contributed to declining school enrolment. The school was reclassified during 2000 from P5 to a P6 with an enrolment of 16. The Aboriginal percentage of the enrolment has steadily increased from 50% in 1998 to an anticipated 85% in 2001. The school is committed to addressing the significant learning and social needs of the student body as demonstrated through a successful literacy program and extracurricular focus.
