Mayfield West School became a demonstration school in 1986. This involves the school in providing support programs and demonstrating best practice for the University of Newcastle and visiting teachers from overseas and other schools. The school endeavours to deliver high quality education programs, through a skilled, caring and co-operative staff so that the potential of each individual student is fully realised. There is a high priority to develop knowledge, skills, values and nurture life-long learning through holistic education. Parent support is varied and generous. The community supports all activities engaged in by the school. An active P and C and School Council operate.
