| Cabbage Tree Island Public School is a one teacher school which caters for students from Kindergarten to Year Two. The school is located on the Cabbage Tree Island on the Richmond River, 20 kilometres south of Ballina. Cabbage Tree Island was established in 1893 as an Aboriginal school. It has 100% Aboriginal enrolment with students living on the island or in nearby Wardell. The school is surrounded by sugar cane, market gardening and tea tree farming. Employment within the community is through the Community Development Employment Program and within the building trades. The school has operated an Early Childhood Transitional class for pre school aged children two days a week. With the assistance of the Department of Community Services, this joint venture has operated successfully over the past two years. Our school purpose was developed by parents, community, members and teachers. It has been reviewed annually and states, "Children enjoy their education through school and community partnerships ." This statement assists the school and community to identify the need for an inclusive Aboriginal program. Through this partnership the students are presented with quality education programs in a culturally relevant learning environment. | ||||
