Athelstane Public School is situated in the suburb of Arncliffe. The school is committed to promoting student achievement in all areas of the curriculum. It has a strong emphasis on the teaching of literacy, numeracy and maintenance of community languages. The school provides an environment that encourages friendliness, tolerance and celebration of achievement. A very active student welfare program exists to promote the ideas of respect for others, positive self image and participation in life long learning. The school also has four support classes for students with special needs. In 1997 the school received a Director General's Award in recognition of its programs promoting Inclusive Education.
